Sun and beach, do you think these are the only features of Majorca? We dare to say you are wrong.

Due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean sea, the Balearic Islands boasts of a multicultural past which has given rise to a valuable historical and monumental legacy.

The major number of art galleries and museums are concentrated in the capital, Palma de Mallorca. The most important ones, among others, are: Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo d’es Baluard, Museo de Mallorca or Caixaforum. The latter located inside the Gran Hotel, the modernist building of unique beauty. We shall continue in the centre looking for some Gothic style monuments. The extraordinary masterpiece of Palma de Mallorca, the Cathedral, is the most prominent example of the movement. It is also known as La Seu or the Sea and Light Cathedral due to its proximity to the Mediterranean sea and its rose window, the biggest one among Gothic Cathedrals in Europe. The beauty of the interior will leave you astounded. Outside the centre make sure you will not miss Castillo de Bellver, one of the very few circular buildings found in European Gothic architecture and surrounded by a thick forest.

Up in the north of the island, in Alcudia and surroundings, you will find more primitive and ancient art treasures such as prehistoric vestiges called “talaiots” as well as Roman ruins of the city of Pollentia. There is no doubt you will enjoy the enriching journey into the past.

If you head to the occidental part of the island, in the heart of Sierra de Tramuntana mountanins, Valldemossa is a must. The small and cosy village was a haven of peace to various artists such as Chopin, Ruben Darío, Miguel de Unamuno, Azorín y Santiago Rusiñol. Nowadays you will be able to visit la Cartuja, the palace where they were accommodated.

As you can see, Majorca is cultural and artistic patchwork. This is just a brief comment to give you an idea of how much culture and history there is to be found within its streets and villages. Leave the sandals and beach towel at least for one day and dedicate it to explore the art. You will be astonished.
